Aging in Place and Bathroom Safety

Bathroom safety is one of the most important areas to address early when helping seniors age in place.

For many Canadians, aging in place means remaining in a familiar home for as long as possible. One of the most important rooms to evaluate is the bathroom because water, hard surfaces and frequent changes in position can increase the risk of a fall.

Preventing Falls

• Use a secure non-slip mat or permanent non-slip surface in the tub or shower.
• Consider a shower seat if standing for a full shower is difficult.
• Install properly secured grab bars where support is needed.
• Choose textured or slip-resistant flooring when renovating.
• Be careful with small loose rugs, which can become a tripping hazard.

Improve Bathroom Lighting

Good lighting is especially important as vision changes with age. Use bright, even lighting without excessive glare, keep the main switch easy to reach near the door, and consider lighting inside the shower area. A motion-activated or automatic night light can make nighttime bathroom trips safer.

Make the Bath or Shower Easier to Use

• A walk-in shower or tub cutout can reduce the height a person must step over.
• Keep shampoo, soap and other essentials within easy reach.
• Use an adjustable or handheld shower head when helpful.
• Add a stable shower seat or bench if needed.
• Place towel bars and hooks where they can be reached without stretching or twisting.

Other Practical Safety Improvements

Keep counters, floors and walkways free of clutter. Where possible, a bathroom door that opens outward can make it easier for someone to assist after a fall. Anti-scald controls can also help prevent burns caused by water that is too hot.

Small changes made before a mobility problem becomes urgent can make it easier to remain independent at home.
