How to Write Your Life Story

Writing your life story can help seniors preserve memories and share experiences with family.

Every life contains stories that family members may never know unless they are recorded. Writing your life story can preserve memories, experiences and lessons for future generations.

How to Organize Your Life Story

There is no single correct format. You can begin with childhood and move chronologically, start with the present and work backward, or organize the story around themes such as family, work, travel or major turning points.

Think About Important Events

You can write about your entire life or focus on one period. Start by making short notes about events you remember, then return later to add details. Family members, photo albums and home movies can help fill in missing pieces.

Small details make a story more vivid: where you lived, what the weather was like, the type of car your family drove, music you listened to, jobs you held and how you felt during important events. Difficult memories can be included too if you are comfortable writing about them.

Still Stuck? Start Here

  1. Introduce yourself and explain where and when your story begins.
  2. Add family and childhood background, including both good and difficult memories.
  3. List accomplishments and moments you are proud of.
  4. Add personal details that show what you were like at different stages of life.
  5. Reflect on how earlier experiences shaped the person you are today.

Your story does not need to be perfect or written all at once. Begin with one memory and build from there.
